Sometimes I really dread traveling many places with the kids, because of all the items I need to bring...clothes, diapers, wipes, toys, books, snacks, blankets, pillows...and that super heavy (not to mention bulky) car seat. It is a lot to tote around. I am hoping we can take a family trip this year (by air). It would be great to use the
CARES (Child Aviation Restraint System) that we have!
CARES is the first alternative to a car seat to be certified for use in airplanes for children either too old (over 2) or too large (22-44 lbs.) to sit in a seat. The child using the CARES must be at least one, and able to sit forward-facing. The device only weighs 1 lb. and fits into a 6" stuff sack. It is very portable, simple to install, and adjustable to fit any size airplane seat. I love this product! That means I don't have to struggle with the bulky car seat in the airport or airplane! The FFA (Federal Aviation Administration) has found that CARES greatly improves safety for young children over the lap belt alone, and provides a level of safety equal to car seats for children in airplanes. Each CARES unit only takes 1 minute to install, and less than a minute to learn how it is done. There is an instructional video to show how to do it.
CARES was invented by Louise Stoll, a grandmother of nine, after watching her pregnant daughter struggle off a plane carrying a toddler, car seat and diaper bag. She knew something was wrong with that picture – safe flying with children had to be made easier!
Louise started out by drawing a series of possible designs for her concept of a child restraint that was light weight, portable, hassle free, and easy to install on airplane seats. These sketches became the basis for her actual patent application. Friends and family advised on the legal, technical and business aspects of turning her concept into a viable product.
Louise patented her child aviation restraint system and licensed it to Phoenix-based AmSafe Aviation, the world’s foremost manufacturer of airplane seat belts and other aviation safety equipment.

That is a fantastic invention! I hate carrying bulky carseats while trying to keep up with my kids in the airport. And if you have two in carseats, plus another child, and have to fly alone with them..... Over seas....
Well, lets just say I would have cried a LOT less that trip.
