Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from the Dog (review & 3 giveaways)

Here is another great Chicken Soup for the Soul book, and it is geared toward those dog lovers out there! This book is adorable! I enjoyed reading the stories of heartfelt warmth, laughter and inspirational (as in all Chicken Soup books) stories compiled in the "What I Learned from the Dog," Chicken Soup for the Soul book.
This book has great stories that tell you how dogs have changed people's lives through what they do out of love for their owner or others, how dogs have rescued people, helped people through therapy, and how dogs have shown how to look differently at situations/experiences.
The title of each story has a quote underneath of it, and I enjoyed reading the quotes. One that I really liked was this, "Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after another." ~Walter Elliott And this one, "God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers." ~Jewish Proverb
There are 9 main sections in this book: Learning about Family, Learning to have courage, Learning to listen, Learning to overcome adversity, learning to heal, learning to say goodbye, learning to put things in perspective, learning to be kinder, and learning about unconditional love. Each section has about 9-15 stories in them, and they are a couple pages long. Each story makes a great point, and can be inspirational.
What I love about the Chicken Soup books is that the stories reveal such great lessons, just in the story. The stories do not need any explanation to get a message across. What I learned for the Dog is a great book, and anyone that has a dog, or a different pet, can relate to many of the stories tucked in this book. Pets are great for sticking by your side, giving you love and attention, and helping you through rough times (therapy, loss, etc.)

I don't have a dog, but I have one funny cat. My mother will never forget the time I called her crying, asking how to get corn syrup out of a cat.

My curious little kitty had managed to jump up onto the kitchen counter while I was making peanut brittle and smack right into 2 cups of corn syrup. That was an interesting afternoon. :-)

Thanks for the chance to win!

We don't have a dog, but I have someone who would love this book! A pet story? A few weekends ago I heard a loud splash, and assumed hubby was doing something in the bathroom. Turns out, our kitten had fallen into the toilet! He was fine and came racing past me, flinging water a minute later!

Our dog has done so many goofy things, I think I could write my own book! LOL! I remember when he was fairly young, I looked out the window and saw him running around in circles in the field with his nose in the air. I looked a little above him and there were birds flying in similar patterns to the way he was running. The silly dog was following the scent of the birds flying over him-it was quite a site! LOL!

I don't have a dog yet, but hope to have a dalmation someday. I would like let my dog comfort the sick or help kids learn to read. I am a firm believer that God created different animals with different purposes. Some animals are specialists in touching the human spirit - dogs are one of them...they make us laugh, comfort us, and give us unconditional love. I can't wait until the kids graduate so we can move to the country and I can finally have a dog of my own.

I did have a dog when I was younger. She was a beautiful, solid white German Shepherd Norwegian Elk Hound. She loved the outdoors and took every opportunity she could to escape the confines of the house. I felt bad that she had to be inside, so I decided to take her for a walk. I was always a teeny little thing and was only about 6 years old, but she was always such a mild dog that I knew I could handle it. WELL, a little fresh air can sure change a "mild-mannered" dog. She felt the wind in her face and took off running with me flopping behind her like a crappie. My dad had to chase us down. I guess the logical thing would have been to let go of the leash! But hey...whose logical when they're six!

I woke up recently to find my 85 pound Golden Retriever asleep on top of the kitchen table! I'm so upset I didn't have a camera handy, but the image will never leave my mind! Thanks.

I was in my late teens and going through a tough time. My dog pepper never left my side during this time. My mother claims he refused to leave even when I was asleep so she had to leave his food in my room. He was the best dog ever and my best friend.

Christina - xristya@rock.com - I knew my German-Shepherd Husky mix Birdie was intelligent (and very loyal), but I didn't know she was like Lassie (who always finds the boy in the well or some sort of trouble!). Birdie came and put her paws up on me, which usually means she has to go out even though it isn't a designated time, and I was preparing to put on my coat when she put her paws up on me again and kept indicating another room with movements of her head! I followed her and she led me into the kitchen, where she put her nose into the food dish and then into the water dish and looked at me expectantly. I looked down and my sweetie had forgotten to fill her water dish! Birdie/Lassie came and told me because she'd been thirsty too long!

My dog was expensive as he was supposed to be an extra tiny long haired chihuahua. 3 years later he is 15lbs and clearly not pure bred, but just a happy little guy. Someone asked if I was angry and wanted any refund, but clearly he is worth every penny. :)

One night after drinking a couple wine coolers, and working on a project I colored the tip of my dogs tail (which was white) blue with one of my washable markers, poor dog ran around in circles trying to get it! having had a few win coolers I thought it was pretty funny at the time!

My dog Mr. Beans the Boxer refuses to eat alone. He will carry his dog food to wherever somebody is in the house, drop it and then eat it! Maybe he thinks he's going to choke and nobody will be there to save him!!

We got our puppy from our local animal shelter. I had picked out a dog on line that I wanted to look at. I was busy looking all over to see if I could find that dog. In the meantime, my husband looked around and picked out the dog that he wanted to get. When I went to look at the dog he wanted, it was the same dog that I had the picture of and was trying to find. She's been our Sammie girl ever since.

We once had a dog that was notorious for eating the cat's food. One day, I put the cat bowl on the dining table to stop her from eating it and forgot about it. Later in the day, when I walked into the dining room, the dog had figured a way to get on the table and was actually standing on the table eating the cat's food. I'll never forget that!

We have a schnoodle. Our dog loves to sleep all day, but gets extremely excited at the end of the day to get a biscuit. She will run after the biscuit in the most acrobatic way, either grabbing the biscuit as it skids across the wood floor or running into a wall or chair while chasing it. Other than biscuit time she seems quiet and clumsy, but she has the grace of a ballerina then.

Our dog used to like to run alongside us and ahead of us when walking the trail and she'd speed by us and I'd always say she's speeding faster than a rolling 'O'

Why does my dog think it's ok to crawl in bed with me and lay on top of my legs? It wouldn't be so bad if he waited until a decent hour, but 4:00 am?? Not a good way to start a Monday!

I had opened a can of corn and set it on the counter-when the UPS man came to the door. When I came back, my boxer had corn all over his head and was looking at me so innocently-i couldnt help but laugh!

Our littlest dog is super agile and can jump from couch to couch easily. One day our other dog who is much heavier than the little one decided she could do this as well. After preparing herself she leapt right onto my dad who was unprepared for her. Now he always freaks out when she tries to jump. thanks for the giveaway

I want this book so bad Santa! I have two shit-zu puppies and they are hilarious! I had them outside for a walk and the older one was on a leash. We were headed back into the house and I was trying to get the older one up on the porch. After a couple of failed attempts I turned around to discover that the little one had ahold of his tail and we were playing tug of war with my poor dog.

My dog has been with me for over 12 years. He has a way of always cheering me up. He can tell when I am down and gives me the nudge with his head and will snuggle tight. He is now fat, blind and arthritic. I will miss him terribly when he is gone

Beezer took his human, and her nieces, down a railroad track past a 100 year old, rickety, now fallen, hotel is located, and to a train overpass that overlooked where a creek spills into the White River. He ran off later when a red fox crossed a rocky road we were walking on. Needless to say, he didn't catch that old fox, who took him on a woodland merry-go-round, but his trailing howl was beautiful to hear.

When my 2 year old son was about 5 months our dog watched him like a hawk. She'd lay down with him in the middle of the floor on her back, just like him and fall asleep. Oh and she had to have a pacifier like him, it was so cute and hilarious.
